Kids! Our family has three of them (six combined from the co-founders). They rack up  a lot of birthdays (and baby showers, before they arrive). And, likewise, we attend baby showers, toddler birthdays and preschool parties, all with a gift in hand. Not that we don’t love gifts (and we LOVE giving them), but you can easily spend $5 on a bag to put it in + tissue paper + cards, several times a month (you get the point). What we’re all about at Inlu is simplifying by making group gifting easy for any gift out there, and with less run-around for everyone (and less mess on the planet).

So, in our search for cool gift ideas, we’ve peeked around ecofabulous for some simple group gift ideas that would be both a) awesome as a group gift for the youngest generation and b) feel-good to contribute to as a participant in a group gift! So, if you have kids or might be expecting one soon, check out these group gift ideas:

ONE: Taika Walker-Bike:
These kid cruisin wheels feature “FSC certified wood, finished with water-based low VOC paints and stains, Taika “walker-bikes”($175 AUS) will have your young one scootin’ around safely and sustainably.”

TWO: Wonderworld Eco-Friendly Wooden Doll House:

“Not only does this house teach your little one key environmental themes (recycling, solar power, rainwater collection), but it’s made of only renewably sourced rubber-wood and non-toxic paint ($149).”

THREE: Eco sheepskin blanket from Nature Baby

Bye Bye synthetic blankies. This natural woolly woobie is an excellent group gift for a new arrival or a toddler who likes to snuggle. “Unlike the conventional sheepskins on the market that are tanned with hazardous chemicals that can off-gas, Nature Baby hand-processes without any toxic materials so you can rest assured your child’s skin won’t be exposed to anything but super soft fibers.” ($99)

FOUR: Hatchling Tees and Onesies from OrganicEcho.com

What Grandma or Grandpa wouldn’t want to pitch in for a new TEE collection that is “made in the USA using super soft organic cotton with azo free dyes and non-toxic inks.” ($26/each, $104 for 4)

FIVE: Recycled Milk Jug Toys

Wow- this is radical. Jumpstart healthy play with recycled milk carton toys! You can collect for one or an entire basket full of smart, sustainable toys. AND, in lieu of the landfill, you can  recycle 100% of the minimal  packaging. Then, you can continue the happy-cycle when you hand them down the line…:) Green Toys, price varies.

SIX: Serena & Lily Bedset

The thing about babies? They require a place to sleep once they arrive! What’s better than an eco-friendly, 100% organic cotton collection to place that bundle of sweet joy? Nothing, except when they fall asleep in your arms. (Sigh…babies are awesome).

SEVEN: Sustainable Pillows from Jaya Loves Tekeko

Well, these are cuddly cool. “Made with organic bamboo and organic cotton, the pillows ($62) are stuffed with kapok fiber – a fluffy filling that is even lighter than down and is naturally resistant to dust mites. With a removable (and thus washable!) cover printed with non-toxic water-based inks,” these are safe and super fabulous.

EIGHT: Green Gift Basket of Goodies

Upon browsing, we saw lots of smaller ticket items that, in combination would make kickin’ group gift basket. Check out the baby care page @ecofabulous for a fantastic assortment of quality, nontoxic lotions potions and baby-skin smoothers.

NINE: Calming Baby Gift Set from Babo Botanicals

“Made in up-state New York, Babo Botanicals’ line of bath products for newborns (such as the Lavender Meadowsweet gift set $45) is made from certified organic ingredients…with anti-oxidants and vitamins to allow for superior protection and care.” There are several gift sets in different price ranges here.

TEN: Hushamok Organic Baby Hammock

“A lightweight aluminum stand and 100% organic cotton baby hammock come together to form a modern day alternative to the traditional bassinet ($409). The swinging and rocking motion will soothe young ones right to sleep (which means more snooze time for you too!).”

Wanna Win a Green and Happy Baby Group Gift Basket TONIGHT?

by inlu blog patrol on April 21, 2011

You do? Well, Practically Green is Hosting a Twitter Party TONIGHT for Earth Day Eve from 9-10 pm EST (why not get a head start, right?).They’ll be chatting with web brands and personalities about how to make life a little greener this year. In their blog they ask,

What are some fun easy ways to celebrate Earth Day EVERY day? What healthy green changes have you made? What’s on your plan?

When we joined the Practically Green Earth Day Eve Twitter Party lineup, we wanted to put together an actual group gift that would be a) eco friendly and b) fun to purchase/gather (like a gift should be) and c) from local stores and/or brands!

This was the super wicked funnest marketing field trip ever! We LOVE LOVE great gifts (psst…they aren’t always big ticket items to be divided up.) They can be fabulous “smaller ticket” items that are special, luxurious and/or a little more expensive, that, when purchased from the group suddenly become more affordable. And, when the gift funds are spent locally and each gift is not wrapped individually, it cuts down on shipping, wrapping and funds spend on bows and all that jazz. Plus, we can all feel good knowing we pitched in for something that is environmentally friendly and healthy for baby.

Here’s what our gift basket for this Tonight’s Twitter Party looks like:

Earth’s Best/Jason Shampoo/Baby Lotion Bath and Body Kit (with washcloth) courtesy of Healthy Living Market- value over $60! Thanks!
EIO Silicone Training Cup courtesy EOI Products
Bambu Kids Bamboo Serving Bowl & Bambu Kids Spoons, discount courtesy The Green Life Store, Burlington VT
Seventh Generation Chlorine Free Diapers (44, Newborn) + Chlorine Free Wipes
Green Sprouts PVC/BPA Free Food Mill
Green Sprouts Eco Friendly Baby Bib
Green Sprouts PVC/BPA Free Silicon Pacifier (newborn)
Eco Friendly Light My Fire “sporks”

And for mommy…Flourish Lip Balm in Honey Blossom

No matter where YOU live, you could easily collect funds for your next celebration (in this case, a baby shower) by thinking locally and dividing the cost of higher quality, but often more “expensive” gifts among a group of friends.

Happy Green Baby Group Gift Assortment will be given away at the Practically Green Earth Day Eve Twitter Party this Thursday from 9-10pm est.

Kids + in lieu of gifts in lieu of TOO MANY gifts = AWESOME

Times are a changing. In an era when TV shows are showcasing over the top parties, there’s another trend happening more quietly:  lieu of gifts…for kids. We’ve seen bring-a-book parties, no gift parties, bring a canned item parties, in lieu of gifts charity parties and that’s why we’re excited for parents to know all about Inlu. Inlu is the “in lieu of too much-stuff-that-will-end-up-in-a-landfill”  meets “give-back-and-feel-good-about-helping-a-cause” option. Kids definitely know the perils of environmental destruction– they see the nature shows, the headlines and the cute polar bears on TV. They also like gifts. Which is totally fair. We had gifts growing up. So why not bring balance? Get something you love, give back to cause. Skip the mess. Done.

Inlu a perfect option for kids parties. It’s easy- as the organizer, you create an invitation with event details. You write a blurb about what your child would REALLY like and then, if you want, you can add any charity to go along with the gift. So for example, let’s say your child wants a new Nerf Gun™, you write that down and all the guests pitch in when they RSVP. At the same time, let’s say you know your child loves dolphins. You add a charity that saves dolphins and your guests can pitch in for the gift, charity or both when they RSVP. The idea is that in lieu of wrapping paper and a card, you can give that money to a cause that matters.

In the end, your kid get a cool gift AND you gave back. There’s no mess from a pile of “stuff” but you didn’t have to skip the gift altogether! It’s all about the balance.

Good idea? Let us know! Want to create your own? It’s free to create and send so give it a shot. OR view a sample.

P.S. The gift part is really flexible. You can set a gift collection limit so excess funds will go to the cause. :) (For example, if  you only need $50, you can set the option to cover the gift, anything over that will be put to the charity fund). Or, if you want a traditional “in lieu of gifts” party, Inlu makes that easy too. Simply check the “no gift” box and all the guests can RSVP and contribute to the charity in one step.
